What is Gender Discrimination?

Gender discrimination is the unfair or unequal treatment of an individual or group based on their gender or gender identity. This type of discrimination can occur in a variety of settings, including the workplace, schools, healthcare, and social situations.

Examples of gender discrimination include:

  • Pay inequality: paying men more than women for the same job
  • Hiring bias: refusing to hire someone based on their gender or gender identity
  • Promotions: passing over qualified women for promotions in favor of less qualified men
  • Pregnancy discrimination: firing or demoting a woman because she is pregnant
  • Harassment: making unwanted sexual advances or comments based on someone’s gender or gender identity
  • Stereotyping: assuming that women are less capable or committed than men, or that men are not interested in certain types of work

Gender discrimination is illegal in many countries, including the United States, and can result in serious consequences for employers who engage in discriminatory behavior. If you feel that you have experienced gender discrimination, you may be able to file a complaint with your employer or a government agency, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
